Philpott's second field goal provided Louisville with its only second-half points. Philpott opened the scoring with a 28-yard field goal as the Cardinals, who had 393 yards of offense in the first two quarters, built a 31-7 halftime lead.
Josh Bellamy and Adam Froman connected on two touchdown passes and Bilal Powell, who scored on a 47-yard run on a fake punt, caught Froman's third TD toss.
Froman was 20 of 33 for a career-high 308 yards with an interception. Bellamy caught four passes for 66 yards.
Powell rushed for 157 yards on 21 carries, and Victor Anderson added 108 yards on the ground as Louisville finished with a season-high 575 yards of offense.
Ryan Aplin passed for 209 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions for Arkansas State (1-4). Allen Muse caught two of the scoring passes and Taylor Stockemer had the other.
With Louisville leading 10-0 after Bellamy's 11-yard TD pass from Froman, Aplin hit Muse for a 33-yard score.
Powell answered with the fake-punt touchdown and caught a 57-yard TD pass from Froman for a 24-7 Cardinals cushion. Froman and Bellamy connected for another score with 13 seconds left in the half.
The Red Wolves rallied with a 15-yard touchdown catch by Muse and 24-yard reception for a score by Stockemer, making the score 31-21.
