STANFORD, Calif. -- There were a lot of long faces as members of the Stanford women's basketball team filed out of the room where they watched the NCAA tournament draw Sunday.

The (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP) Cardinal (24-6) earned a sixth seed in the Midwest Regional and will play 11th-seeded Missouri (17-12) in the first round Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Stanford figured it would at least earn a No. 4 seed and hoped to stay in the West region. Instead, Arizona, runner-up to Stanford in the Pac-10 tournament, received a No. 9 seed in the West.

"I think it shows disrespect for our team and disrespect for our conference," 18th-year Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "What are we going to do, cry about it? We're not worried about the seeding. ... I think they (players) are in absolute shock. We sat there and couldn't believe it. We thought Arizona would be there (in the West). ...

"I don't try to figure it out. They're just jealous they don't live out here, I don't know. For our team to be shown disrespect -- that's not a bad thing. Let us be the one with a chip on our shoulder for once."

Stanford, a two-time national champion, is fresh off its second straight Pac-10 tournament championship. The Cardinal are making their 17th straight trip to the NCAA tournament, but haven't reached the Final Four since they did it three straight times from 1995 to 1997.

They've only made it out of the second round once since then, two years ago.

"We all were definitely a little bit surprised when we saw our name next to a six seed," guard Kelley Suminski said. "It doesn't really matter right now."
