PLAYER TO WATCH

Stephanie Del Preore

The 6-foot-1 forward led the Red Foxes in scoring (13.1 points) and rebounds (8.1) during the regular season, then netted 30 points and 16 rebounds in the MAAC final to help earn Marist its first NCAA Tournament bid. Del Preore, the MAAC tournament MVP, became the first player in Marist history to tally at least 20 rebounds and points in a game on Jan. 31, when she tallied 31 points and a single-game school record 21 rebounds.

ANALYSIS BY ESPN'S STACEY DALES-SCHUMAN
Stacey Dales-SchumanHow exciting life has become in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Red Foxes won a share of the MAAC regular-season title and their first Metro Atlantic Conference tournament, which won them their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. And after a 13-16 record a year ago, Brian Giorgis was named the 2003-04 conference Coach of the Year after guiding his team to just the second 20-win season in program history. It all seems fitting when you carry five seniors who know what to do when the time comes.

The top senior in that mix is 6-foot guard/forward Stephanie Del Preore. This worker does a whole lot of damage inside the arc and around the cylinder. Del Preore has been complemented throughout the season by fellow 6-1 senior forward Maureen Magarity, who is averaging almost 13 points and five rebounds. A transfer from Boston College, Magarity traveled to the NCAA Tournament second round with the Golden Eagles during the 1999-2000 season. This experience alone could very well benefit the entire Red Fox crew.

A team that rotates nine players deep, Marist gets outrebounded by two boards per outing, and there is no denying that the Red Foxes' bigs have their work cut out for them in the tournament.

That said, the Red Foxes do an excellent job taking care of the ball with a national ranking of just 14 turnovers per match -- yet another indication of strong senior leadership. Veteran point guard and floor general Nina Vecchio is the main culprit for this, as she accounts for a team high 3.5 assists to just less than two turnovers per game.
