PLAYER TO WATCH

Katie Beth Pate

So young. So good. Pate, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, is a force in the middle for the Lady Bison. She not only alters opposing offenses by blocking four shots a game, she also averages nearly a double-double (12 points, nine rebounds) on the offensive end.

ANALYSIS BY ESPN'S STACEY DALES-SCHUMAN
Stacey Dales-SchumanIn just his first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Frank Bennett earned Coach of the Year honors after leading his team to its first share of the league's regular-season title.

Bennett and his crew then went through the conference tournament to earn the school a trip to the postseason for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Leading the way for the Lady Bisons is 5-foot-9 junior guard Courtney Boynton, who is averaging a team-best 15 points and strong five rebounds.

Also influential this season has been the towering play of 6-5 sophomore Katie Beth Pate. Behind a 47 percent accuracy from the field, she is averaging 12 points and a monstrous nine boards. She also ranked third in the nation with four blocks per game.

The team's playmaker and leader is senior point guard Kendra Ramsey, who hands off an unselfish five assists per game.

With four returning seniors, the Lady Bisons used their experience to their advantage this season. They execute sound defense, ranking at the top of the conference in field-goal percent defense -- especially out beyond the arc. But they also give up a fair amount of boards to the opponent.

Much of their strength at the defensive end stems from the fact they block at least five shots per game. With nonconference wins at Hawaii and against the SEC's Ole Miss, Bennett's team was able to push confidently through the regular season and gain momentum for the greatest event of all, the NCAA Tournament.
