Coaches, media pick McCarville
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota center Janel McCarville was named Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media Wednesday.
McCarville, a 2004 All-American and Final Four All-Tournament Team member, was joined on the coaches' preseason All-Big Ten Team by Michigan State's Lindsay Bowen, Ohio State's Jessica Davenport, Purdue's Katie Gearlds and Penn State's Tanisha Wright.
The media preseason All-Big Ten team included McCarville, Davenport, Gearlds, Wright and Indiana's Jenny DeMuth.
"This is a great honor for Janel, but it is a preseason honor,'' Minnesota coach Pam Borton said. "We expect big things from her this season.''
McCarville averaged 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. She ranked second nationally in field goal percentage (61.6 percent) and 13th in rebounding. She averaged 19.4 points and 15 rebounds per game in the NCAA Tournament and set a tournament record with 75 rebounds.
Minnesota begins the regular season Nov. 14 against Nevada-Las Vegas at the WBCA Classic in Seattle.
