BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sharon Versyp was hired as the Indiana women's basketball coach, leaving Maine after five years to return to the state where she starred in college.

Versyp replaces Kathi Bennett, who resigned March 1 after leading the Hoosiers to a 72-75 record in five seasons.

Her resignation at Maine and decision to join Indiana was announced Friday by Maine spokesman Brent Williamson. Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan welcomed Versyp at a news conference later Friday.

"It is such a great feeling to be back in my home state," Versyp said. "My vision is to get people excited about Indiana women's basketball."

Versyp led Maine to a 98-51 record and three consecutive America East Conference titles from 2003-05. The Black Bears went 25-6, 25-7 and 20-10 records the past three seasons, gaining an NCAA Tournament berth in 2004.

She is the third consecutive Maine women's coach to join a Big Ten school, following Trish Roberts at Michigan and Joanne P. McCallie, who led Michigan State to the NCAA championship game this season.

Versyp started for four years at Purdue. She then coached high school and was an assistant at Louisville and James Madison before going to Maine.
