Williams hopes to build on last season's NCAA berth
HOUSTON -- Greg Williams was hired Wednesday to be the new women's basketball coach at Rice.
Williams, the former coach of the WNBA's Detroit Shock, replaces Cristy McKinney, who left for Clemson after leading Rice to its second NCAA tournament appearance.
"Cristy McKinney and her staff established a winning tradition in women's basketball at Rice, and my goal will be to continue that tradition," Williams said in a statement.
Williams, a Rice graduate, coached at Houston from 1985-89 and Colorado State from 1990-97. He led both schools to their first NCAA tournament appearances.
Williams became the coach of the Shock in 2000 but was replaced in 2002 by Bill Laimbeer after the team started the season 0-10.
