TULSA, Okla. -- Tulsa coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson hired LaTricia Gunnells, one of her former players at St. John's, as an assistant for the Golden Hurricane women's basketball team on Wednesday.
Gunnells, 30, spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Central Florida. She has also been an assistant at Lehman College in New York.
Gunnells played at Lansing (Mich.) Community College before transferring to St. John's in 1996. She was the team captain from 1996-98 and became an undergraduate assistant the following season. Thomas-Swinson was head coach at St. John's from 1997-99.
"LaTricia played for me at St. John's and I am glad to have her here as a part of the TU women's basketball program," Thomas-Swinson said. "She specializes in both the match-up zone and special situations, and she will bridge the awareness of how we will execute our defense and set plays.
"LaTricia knows what it takes to win and her recruiting efforts will help us bring in talented players to our program."
Gunnells joins a staff that already includes former Oklahoma State assistant Amy Williams and former Auburn assistant Sam Purcell. Williams and Purcell were hired Monday.
