BATON ROUGE, La. -- The NCAA has granted Southern's
Fredrieka Lewis a medical redshirt for last season, allowing the
6-foot-4 center three more seasons of eligibility, Southern coach
Sandy Pugh said.
Lewis averaged 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds as a freshman. Her
24-point, 12-rebound performance in the Southwestern Athletic
Conference tournament final that season led Southern to the league
Lewis hurt her ankle early last season and was benched for good
Without Lewis, Southern finished with a 16-14 record but still
made the tournament final before losing to Alcorn State.
Pugh said the NCAA's decision means Southern could have both
Lewis and Purdue transfer Indi Johnson, a 6-2 forward, on the court
for the next three seasons.
"Those two will put the program on solid footing for the next
three years," Pugh said.
Also returning to the Jaguars for her senior season will be
guard Rolanda Monroe, a two-time SWAC tournament MVP.
