MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota freshman Ashley Ellis-Milan will have season-ending surgery on her right knee, leaving the Gophers short a player in the post.

Ellis-Milan, a prep star at St. Paul Central, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee during Saturday's opening practice. Minnesota is also without its best frontcourt player from last season since Janel McCarville is now in the WNBA.

Center Liz Podominick is expected to replace McCarville as the starting center.
