Wyoming's Legerski gets two-year extension
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Two more years for Joe Legerski: The Wyoming women's basketball coach has received a contract extension that would keep him on through 2011.
Legerski makes a base salary of $104,000 a year. With the extension he will get a raise, although the amount will not be determined until the athletics department fiscal year begins July 1, a department spokesman, Aaron Voos, said Friday.
Legerski's pay package will also include incentives for team academic achievement, ticket sales and team performance, as well as opportunities for outside income through speaking engagements and radio and television appearances.
A $100,000 annuity is offered if he stays for the full term of the contract.
The Cowgirls' season ended Wednesday with a 72-67 loss to Nebraska in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Wyoming finished 21-9, including 10-6 in the Mountain West Conference.
Legerski signed a five-year contract to become the Cowgirls' head coach in 2003. Wyoming finished 11-18 and 6-8 in the conference that season and Legerski's contract was extended by a year in late 2004.
In 2004-05, he helped the Cowgirls to a record of 16-12, including 7-7 in the conference.
This past season, the program had only its second 20-win season in its 33-year history.
Athletics Director Gary Barta said Legerski has done an "amazing job."
"He's doing it the right way and building a foundation that gives us a chance to succeed over the long haul," he said.
"With the base salary, his additional incentives and the annuity, we've put together a very competitive package," Barta said. "I look forward to working with coach Legerski and his staff for many years to come."
Legerski came to Wyoming after Cindy Fisher's departure to become an assistant at Nebraska. He had been an assistant for the Utah women's team for seven seasons and then associate head coach for the Utes for five years.
Legerski was an assistant with the Cowgirls from 1987-1991. He was the head women's coach at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs in 1986 and the girls basketball coach at Rock Springs High School from 1984-1986.
He received a bachelor's degree in business education from Wyoming in 1979.
