CAIRNS, Australia -- Candace Parker scored 26 points and
Alana Beard added 21 as the United States beat China 85-77 in the
opening game of a four-country women's basketball tournament.
Chen Xiaoli scored 26 points for China, while Sylvia Fowles and
Tina Thompson added 10 points each for the United States.
China led by six points early, but the United States took a
24-16 lead after the first quarter. China, after hitting 17 of 20
foul shots in the first half, led 41-37 at halftime.
The score was tied 58-58 after three quarters before the
Americans pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring China 27-19.
Australia, led by Tully Bevilaqua's 15 points, beat Taiwan
97-54. Australia outscored Taiwan 60-24 in the second half.
