RALEIGH, N.C. -- Kay Yow, the North Carolina State women's basketball coach, said Friday she is considering a return to the court after treatment for breast cancer.
Yow, 64, said recent blood tests showed a decline in cancer cells since she began chemotherapy in November.
"These tests will be very important in determining when I might be able to return to the court," Yow said in a statement posted on the school's Web site. "It is a possibility."
This is Yow's 32nd season as coach of the Wolfpack. Stephanie Glance has been serving as interim coach, leading the team to an 11-4 record.
Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, the year before she coached the United States to a gold medal in the Seoul Olympics. The cancer returned in 2004.
"The fact that they have persevered through it, the team and the staff, says a lot about them and their character because, emotionally I think we have been on a little bit of a roller coaster from not knowing what to expect," Yow said.
Yow was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
