Pac-10 women's tournament will leave San Jose for L.A.
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The Pac-10 women's basketball tournament will move from San Jose to Los Angeles for at least two years starting in 2009.
The conference approved the move to the Galen Center on the University of Southern California campus at its recent summer meetings.
The start of the women's tournament will also be moved back to more closely coincide with the men's tournament at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. In 2009, the women's tournament will begin March 4 and end March 7. The men will start and end a day earlier.
"We anticipate fans from each institution will attend the games of both of their teams, and participate in ancillary events for both tournaments," commissioner Tom Hansen said. "Having them in the nation's second largest media market also presents opportunities for the conference, and provides an outstanding showcase for our student-athletes."
San Jose, which has hosted the women's tournament since 2003, will be the site of the tournament in 2008. Attendance in San Jose had been low in recent years, averaging about 3,700 fans a game this season.
The Galen Center, which opened last fall, seats about 10,500 fans.
