Sugar Bears fire ex-player, current coach Seals-Horton
CONWAY, Ark. -- Central Arkansas fired women's basketball coach Checola Seals-Horton on Monday after the Sugar Bears started the season 2-11.
Ron Marvel was named interim coach for Central Arkansas, which is in its second season in Division I. Marvel coached the Sugar Bears from 1980-2004, going 489-207.
Seals-Horton, who became the coach when Marvel retired in March 2004, had been a star player under Marvel.
"The entire UCA community appreciates the outstanding playing career of Checola Seals-Horton and the legacy that she left as a player at UCA," athletic director Brad Teague said. "However, because of the 2-11 start this season and due to a declining won-loss record over the past four years, we felt like it was necessary to make an immediate change."
The Sugar Bears recently lost back-to-back games to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State by 73 and 71 points. Central Arkansas was 61-43 under Seals-Horton.
