NCAA adds 17 sites for first, second round of '09, '10 NCAA tournament
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA added 17 sites for the first two rounds of the 2009 and 2010 NCAA tournaments on Tuesday.
The sites were needed after the Division I Women's Basketball Committee decided last summer that the championship would be expanding to 16 predetermined first and second-round sites beginning in 2009.
Additional cities chosen to host first- and second-round games in 2009 include Bowling Green, Ky., Chattanooga, Tenn., East Lansing, Mich., Iowa City, Iowa, South Bend, Ind., San Diego, Seattle and Storrs, Conn.
The additional first and second rounds of the 2010 championship will be played in Albuquerque, N.M., Ames, Iowa, Cincinnati, Durham, N.C., Louisville, Ky., Norman, Okla., Pittsburgh, Tallahassee, Fla. and Seattle.
"The committee was pleased with the amount of interest generated when we announced that we were going to 16 predetermined sites again in 2009 and 2010," said Judy Southard, senior associate director of athletics at LSU and chair of the Division I Women's Basketball Committee.
