WBCA names Auriemma national coach of year for fourth time
STORRS, Conn. -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Associations named Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma the 2008 Russell/WBCA Division I National Coach of the Year on Monday afternoon.
This comes on the heels of Auriemma being named 2008 co-coach of the year by the Big East. Auriemma's Huskies finished the regular season 33-1, 15-1 in the Big East, and won both the Big East regular-season and tournament titles. The 30-plus wins marks the 13th time the Huskies have done so in the school's history, all under Auriemma's watchful eye.
This is the fourth time Aurriemma's fellow coaches have named him the National Coach of the Year. Auriemma previously won the award for the 1996-97, 1999-00 and 2001-02 seasons.
Connecticut, the No. 1 overall seed in the women's NCAA tournament, takes on eighth seeded Texas (22-12) on Tuesday at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET in Bridgeport, Conn.
