Alcorn St. hires former Vol player Edwards as new coach

LORMAN, Miss. -- Alcorn State hired former University of Tennessee player Tonya Edwards as its women's basketball coach Monday.

Edwards spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Detroit-Mercy.

Alcorn State athletic director Darren J. Hamilton said during Edwards' tenure at Detroit-Mercy she oversaw the budget, served as recruiter and coached the guards.

Edwards won national championships with the Lady Vols in 1987 and '89 and scored 1,309 points in her career. She also played in the WNBA.

Alcorn State will hold a news conference on Tuesday in Jackson to introduce Edwards.
