UConn's Buck to miss first three weeks of season with mono
STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut freshman center Heather Buck will miss at least the first three weeks of the basketball season after being diagnosed with mononucleosis.
Buck was expected to provide the depth in the post behind juniors Tina Charles and Kaili McLaren that was lost when the Huskies' top recruit, Elena Delle Donne, gave up basketball and enrolled at Delaware to play volleyball.
Buck averaged 26.4 points and 16.3 rebounds last season at Stonington High School, about 50 miles from the Connecticut campus.
UConn coach Geno Auriemma says Buck will be evaluated every week by the team's training staff members, who will determine when she is healthy enough to play.
