Connecticut gets 27 of 31 votes for No. 1
Connecticut, which has won 78 straight games and the last two NCAA women's basketball titles, is No. 1 to start the season in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll.
But the Huskies were not a unanimous choice.
Preseason Coaches' Poll
The top five teams in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll:
UConn received 27 of 31 first-place votes and 765 total points, outpointing Baylor and Stanford, who tied for second with 724 points. Baylor had two first-place votes and Stanford picked up one.
No. 4 Tennessee, with 674 points, picked up the other first-place vote. Duke (619 points) rounded out the top five.
Xavier (602), Ohio State (522), Texas A&M (512), Oklahoma (506) and Kentucky (497) followed in the preseason voting of 31 coaches.
Connecticut and Baylor meet on Nov. 16 (6 p.m. ET, ESPN2) in an early-season showdown in Hartford, Conn. UConn also has Stanford on its schedule -- that game is set for Dec. 30 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN2) in Palo Alto, Calif.
Baylor and Tennessee meet on Dec. 14 in Waco, Texas (6 p.m. ET, ESPN2), while Stanford visits Tennessee on Dec. 19 (4 p.m. ET, ESPN2). Duke and Connecticut meet Jan. 31 in Storrs, Conn. (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
