Southern California faces South Florida in first round

No. 9 South Florida (19-11) at No. 8 USC (18-11) 9:30 pm EST

NORFOLK, Virginia (Ticker) -- Eighth-seeded Southern California hopes to relive fond memories when it takes on ninth-seeded South Florida in the first round of a Bridgeport Region contest.

The Women of Troy won their first national championship here 23 years ago and hope to channel that positive energy into a win against the Bulls, who will be playing their first Tournament game.

USC is in the Tournament for the second straight year and 14th time overall. The Women of Troy finished fourth in the Pac-10 Conference and reached the semifinals of their conference tournament.

South Florida, which seeks its second straight 20-win season, finished tied for sixth in the 16-team Big East and is one of seven teams in the conference in the field 64.

The winner will play either top-seeded Duke or No. 16 Southern in the second round Tuesday.
