Stanford would have just a 40-mile drive to Haas Pavilion if it advances to next Saturday's Berkeley Regional semifinal.

The Cardinal, though, realize they need to take care of a San Diego State team Monday night that will be looking to extend its program record to 18 consecutive home wins.

Stanford (30-4), the second seed, returns to Cox Arena looking for its 18th straight win overall. Saturday's 74-39 victory over UC Santa Barbara was the Cardinal's 10th consecutive first-round victory in the NCAA tournament.

Jayne Appel, the Pac-10 player of the year, recorded her fourth double-double in nine career NCAA tournament games with 15 points and 11 rebounds. "I think we are really excited," Appel said of a potential regional semifinal close to the Stanford campus. "But we are glad to get this first one done."

Freshman forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 13 points and 11 boards and Kayla Pedersen followed her season-high 25-point effort in last Sunday's Pac-10 tournament championship victory over Southern California with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Stanford, in the top 10 nationally in rebounding at 43.7 per game, outrebounded the Gauchos 57-31. San Diego State, meanwhile, has been outrebounded in 12 of its last 18 games.

The Cardinal are among the nation's leaders, shooting 47.1 percent from the field, but hit just 28-of-73 (38.4 percent) against the Gauchos. Stanford, however, scored the final 16 points of the first half en route to a 42-14 lead.

"We hit our shots, rebounded and took care of the ball really well early on," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said after the Cardinal earned back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time. "I think we can play better. We will have to do a better job on Monday."

If Stanford is going to move one step closer to its second straight championship game appearance, it will have to accomplish something no opposing team has done at Cox Arena since last season: defeat the Aztecs.

San Diego State (24-7) improved to 15-0 at Cox Arena this season with a 76-70 win over seventh-seeded DePaul on Saturday. The No. 10 seed Aztecs, making their first NCAA tournament appearance in 12 years, have won 17 in a row at home since a 55-44 loss to Wyoming on Feb. 20, 2008.

"Without a doubt it was an exciting, exciting win," said San Diego State coach Beth Burns, the Mountain West coach of the year.

San Francisco native Jene Morris matched her career high with 35 points against the Blue Demons as the Aztecs won their first NCAA tournament game since an 81-75 victory over Hawaii on March 18, 1994.

San Diego State, though, is 0-3 all-time in second-round games.

Morris, a junior, has faced Stanford twice in her career, both while playing with California in 2005-06. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 13.0 points and 2.0 steals versus the Cardinal. Morris has scored 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time in her career.

"She likes March," Burns said. "That's a good thing. I'm glad she likes March."

San Diego State has held 29 of 31 opponents this season to 70 or fewer points, but takes on a Stanford team that ranks among the Division I leaders at 76.3 points per game.

The Cardinal are shooting 47.1 percent from the field, fifth-best in the nation.

This is the first meeting between Stanford and San Diego State in the NCAA tournament. The Aztecs lead the all-time series 4-3.

The winner faces No. 3 seed Ohio State or 11th-seeded Mississippi State on March 28.
