ST. JOHN, Virgin Island (Ticker) -- The championship game of
the Paradise Jam between 12th-ranked Arizona State and No. 18
Rutgers has been canceled.
The meeting between the two ranked teams scheduled for Saturday
night will not be played due to the death of a family member
of Sun Devils senior forward Aubree Johnson that was in St.
Thomas to watch her play.
Details surrounding the death were not disclosed, but Arizona
State coach Charli Turner Thorne released a statement.
"This morning the Arizona State women's basketball program
suffered a tragic loss," she said. "The ASU basketball family
extends well beyond the players and coaches listed on the
"It includes the families and loved ones of every player, coach
and support staff member in the program. When one of them
encounters a loss, it is a loss that is shared by every member
of the 'family.' With that it mind the team decided that it
would be best to not go forward with playing Rutgers in
tonight's championship game."
Johnson has averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in starting all
six games for the Sun Devils (5-1), who advanced to the title
game with a 67-63 victory over Western Kentucky on Friday.
