Wildcats face 2nd-round date with Rice

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Shannon Hobson had a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds for No. 24 Arizona in an 87-72 victory Friday night over Saint Mary's in the first round of the Preseason Women's NIT.

The Wildcats made 55 percent of their shots goals to advance to a second-round matchup Sunday against Rice.

Shawntinice Polk added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Arizona. Jessica Arnold scored all 17 of her points in the first half.

Saint Mary's was led by Triola Jackson with 21 points. Erynn Van Burger added 17 and Mikaela Cowles 14 for the Gaels.

The Wildcats used a 16-3 run midway in the first half en route to a 50-31 lead at the break. They led by 33 points at one stage of the second half.

Saint Mary's had 23 turnovers but stayed in the game by making 14-of-27 3-pointers. Cowles hit four of them, and Jackson and Van Burger had three each.
