CASPER, Wyo. (AP) -- Wyoming coach Joe Legerski knew Erin Hicks
was a shooter when he recruited her. But he'd never seen her put
together a game like this.
Hicks had six 3-pointers and 26 points, both career highs, as
Wyoming beat Ohio 89-43 Saturday night in the Wyoming Shootout.
In addition to her 10-of-16 shooting, including six-of-nine on
3-point tries, Hicks had eight rebounds and four steals.
"I knew Erin could shoot the basketball when we got her,"
Legerski said. "What she's improved on is the intensity to play at
this level."
Hicks' second 3-pointer gave the Cowgirls (6-1) a 25-4 lead
midway through the first half, and Ohio (2-5) never recovered.
Late in the first half, the Bobcats pulled within 32-20 on
Simone Redd's pull-up jumper from the baseline. But Hanna Zavecz
answered with three consecutive baskets to give Wyoming a 38-20
lead at halftime.
"The start of the game was when we dug our hole. We just did
not get going," Ohio coach Lynn Bria said. "Part of it might be a
little bit the altitude. But we've had other games, too, where we
didn't get out of the gate."
The game was never close after that. Hicks opened the second
half with another 3-pointer, her fourth of the game, to start a
22-6 run that made it 60-26 with 10:42 left. Hicks fifth 3-pointer
came late in that run, her sixth made it 73-39 with 6:28 left.
"She's amazing hitting the open threes like that," Ashley
Elliott said of Hicks. She hits that first one, and it's just a
confidence booster."
"It just felt good tonight," Hicks said.
Elliott scored 16 points for the Cowgirls, Zavecz finished with
15 and Tarah LaPar had 10.
Redd led Ohio with 12 points.
