CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Shannon Howell scored 33 points to lead
Oregon State to its first conference win of the season, 83-55 over
Washington State Thursday night.
Mandy Close had 15 points and Kim Butler added nine for the
Beavers (5-10, 1-5), winners of 12 in a row over the Cougars.
Washington State (4-12, 0-7) lost its ninth straight after
starting the season 4-3. The Cougars, who were led by Kate Benz
with 16 points and 14 rebounds, shot just 33 percent.
Howell, the Beavers' top scorer at 17.9 points per game, hit 12
of 13 free throws and had five steals.
A senior guard who transferred to Oregon State from Nebraska,
Howell briefly led the nation in scoring earlier in the year. She
scored 36 points against Florida on Dec. 12 and her career-high is
40, set against Washington last year.
Washington State coach Sherri Murrell was ejected at 6:18 in the
second half with her team trailing 65-47 after receiving two
technical fouls in a row.
The Cougars came into the game shooting 34.6 percent and
averaging only 56.3 points per game -- making them worst in the
conference in both categories.
