SEATTLE (AP) -- Jill Bell scored 17 points as Washington defeated
California 80-76 Saturday afternoon.
California's Leigh Gregory scored, drawing a foul from Bell with
31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to pull within one,
Huskies' Kayla Burt hit two free throws, and California's Sarah
Pool missed a lay-up as Washington held on for the victory. The
Huskies have won three of their last four games.
Washington (9-12, 5-6), which averages only 36 percent shooting,
shot a season-high 53 percent from the field, including 68 percent
in the second half.
Renee Wright scored 17 points and Gregory finished with 15
points for California (8-12, 2-9). Jessica Lawson added nine.
The Golden Bears had five players in double figures, including
reserve Emmelie Geraedts with 10 points.
Washington's Breanne Watson scored 13 points and Burt finished
with 12 points.
Despite 15 turnovers, the Golden Bears led at the half, 34-31.
Washington used a 12-2 run late in the half to pull ahead,
29-28, but Lawson put California back in front with under two
minutes left in the half.
California is 8-37 all-time against Washington, and has lost
seven in a row. It has not defeated Washington since its 51-49 win
in Berkeley on Feb. 24, 2000.
