BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Jessica Lawson scored 19 points and had
12 rebounds to help California snap a 19-game losing streak to
Arizona with a 70-61 win at Haas Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
The last time Cal (9-13, 3-10) defeated Arizona (15-8, 7-5) was
just under a decade ago (Feb. 11, 1995), when the Bears beat the
Wildcats in Berkeley, 94-66.
Cal also broke an eight-game losing streak with the win. Leigh
Gregory scored 12 points for Cal but the big shot came from Kiki
Williams, who drained a three-pointer with 6:59 left to give Cal
the lead for good in what had been a close game throughout.
Williams also nailed a 12-footer after Arizona had cut the
margin to two, and the Wildcats got no closer than four thereafter.
Dee-Dee Wheeler topped Arizona with 21 points and Ashley
Whisonant had 12, but the Bears frustrated 6-5 Wildcat center
Shawntinice Polk, holding her to just eight points and two rebounds
before she fouled out.
Overall, Arizona was punished on the boards, as Cal outrebounded
the visitors 59-42.
Arizona finished with eight blocked shots, but the Wildcats shot
just 29 percent for the game, which along with their lack of
rebounding, cost them any chance for a win.
The game got off to a ragged start, as neither team shot or
handled the ball with anything like Division I efficiency.
The score was just 12-12 after 10 minutes, and though the
offensive pace picked up, the tape of the game was in no danger of
being sent to the NCAA Basketball Hall of Fame.
Cal led by two at the break, 30-28, despite turning the ball
over 11 times and having six shots blocked, a career-high three by
