    Whittington leads N.C. State past Greensboro

    RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Khadijah Whittington and some suffocating defense carried North Carolina State (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today; No. 23 AP) to an impressive victory in its season opener.

    Whittington scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and the Wolfpack defense forced 35 turnovers en route to a 76-46 triumph over UNC Greensboro.

    A sophomore forward, Whittington made 5-of-14 shots from the floor and 11-of-16 from the line. She also grabbed eight offensive rebounds and added four steals, two assists and two blocks.

    Tiffany Stansbury added 15 points and eight rebounds and Keisha Brown chipped in 10 points off the bench for North Carolina State, which shot under 40 percent (27-of-69) from the floor, including just 3-of-18 from the arc.

    Jasmine Byrd was the high scorer for UNC Greensboro (0-1) with 12 points. Kemena Brooks added 10 off the bench for the Spartans, who shot just 35 percent (18-of-51) from the field and missed 11-of-19 free throws.
