Balanced attack leads No. 21 Utah past Jacksonville St.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Kim Smith had 21 points and six rebounds
to lead Utah (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today; No. 22 AP) to an 83-46 victory over Jacksonville State in
the season opener for both teams Saturday.

Heidi Carlsen shot 3-for-3 from 3-point range and scored 11
points for the Utes. Joh-Teena Filipe also finished with 11, and
Shona Thorburn added 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Rebecca Haynes shot 6-for-15 and scored 15 points for
Jacksonville State.

Midway through the first half Utah used a 16-0 run to take a
28-7 lead. The Utes led 39-17 at the break.

Jacksonville State shot 7-for-30 in the first half. The Utes
made 11 3-pointers and shot 44 percent from beyond the arc.
