PHILADELPHIA (SportsTicker) -- Whitney Ffrench hit two free throws with two seconds remaining to lift Saint Joseph's to its first victory over a ranked opponent in four seasons, a 54-52 triumph over No. 25 North Carolina State.
Ffrench scored 11 points and Faith Schutte added 16 for Saint Joseph's (2-0), which had lost 11 straight games to ranked teams dating to a 64-58 victory over Rutgers on Nov. 18, 2001.NC State (1-1) held a 52-51 lead with four seconds left when Khadijah Whittington missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Ffrench grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Wolfpack guard Ashley Key. She calmly sank both free throws to give the Hawks the
lead.After NC State's inbounds pass went out of bounds and Ayahna Cornish hit 1-of-2 from the line to push the lead to two points. Ffrench intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the win.Key scored 11 points and Whittington and Tiffany Stansbury contributed 10 apiece for the Wolfpack, who held a 43-31 lead midway through the second half.
