No. 12 Minnesota battles, rallies to beat Virginia

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) -- Liz Podominick had 18 points and eight rebounds and No. 12 Minnesota rallied to beat Virginia 69-64 Saturday to win the Paradise Jam tournament.

Tournament MVP Jamie Broback added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Gophers, who won the four-team, round-robin tournament.

Sharnee Zoll scored 16 points and Denesha Kenion added 13 points for Virginia.

Minnesota rallied from a 29-27 halftime deficit.

"The first 10 minutes, Virginia was the more aggressive team and the more aggressive team wins," Minnesota coach Pam Borton said. "Our kids played tough and beat a very good Virginia team."

Emily Fox made a 3-pointer with 1:40 left to give Minnesota a 65-59 lead. Kenion answered with a 3-pointer for Virginia.

Zoll drew a charge to give Virginia the ball back and Lyndra Littles made a jumper with 50 seconds left to bring the Cavaliers within one at 65-64

But Podominick's one-handed bank shot, coupled with one of two free throws by Broback gave the Golden Gophers a 68-64 lead.

Fox made one of two from the line with 4.6 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
