SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Kim Smith scored 22 points to lead Utah (No. 22 ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) to a 62-53 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night, handing the Beavers their first loss of the season.
Utah (3-1) was in the lead for the entire second half, and Smith's six free throws near the end prevented a late Oregon State (3-1) rally.
Smith was 8-of-10 from the line for the night and 7-for-15 from the floor.
Utah's Julie Larsen finished with 14 points. Shona Thorburn added 10 points and four assists, and Shauna Brouillard had 11 rebounds.
Oregon State was led by Kim Butler with 16 points. Mandy Close scored 13 and Casey Nash added 10. Anita Rivera finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kim Butler led the Beavers in rebounds with nine.
With 3:34 left, a basket by Rivera pulled Oregon State within 51-46, but the Beavers could get no closer.
The game was tight for much of the first half until a 3-pointer by Utah's Julie Larsen with 4:32 left sparked a 10-2 run that put the Utes up by 12. Oregon State's Casey Nash made a basket to end Utah's run with 10 seconds left in the half, and Utah led 32-22 at
Both teams took 50 shots from the field during the game, with Oregon State hitting 22 and Utah 20. However, Utah was 17-of-23 from the line, compared to OSU's 5-of-11.
