IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Alexis Castro scored 19 points, including
five in the final minute, to lead Vermont to a 55-52 victory over
San Jose State in the consolation game of the Hawkeye Challenge
Vermont trailed most of the game, but tied it at 42 on a short
jumper by Castro with 3:54 to go. Castro sank two foul shots to put
the Catamounts (3-4) up 50-49 with just under a minute to play,
then extended the lead to 53-49 moments later when she scored on a
put back and hit the ensuing free throw.
San Jose State (2-3), losers of three straight, were led by
Amber Jackson's 18 points. Lamisha Augustine added 15 points and 10
Vermont also got 11 points from Sy Janousek and Brittney Cross
added nine and led the team with eight rebounds. The Catamounts
shot just 30 percent in the game, but excelled at the free throw
line, shooting 85 percent and hitting 8-of-9 in the second half.
The Spartans were just 1-17 from behind the 3-point arc (6
percent), shot 54 percent from the line and had 23 turnovers,
compared to 15 for Vermont.
