STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) -- Jessica Smith scored 17 of her 21
points in the first half and Stony Brook, playing a nationally-ranked Division I team for the first time, upset Temple (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today; No. 20 AP)
58-56 on Wednesday night.
Mykeema Ford added 17 points for the Seawolves (4-2), while
Sidney Orndorff had 11 points. Dana Ferrara had four points and 11
rebounds for Stony Brook, which was outrebounded 39-25.Candice Dupree had 23 points and 16 rebounds, 10 offensive, for
the Owls (6-2), who lost their second straight. Jennifer Owens
added 13 points for Temple and Lady Comfort had 11.Orndorff's 3-pointer gave Stony Brook a 53-45 lead with 6:23
left. The Owls then went on an 11-3 run to get with 57-56 on
Kamesha Hairston's 3-pointer with 1:32 left. Orndorff made one of
two free throws for the two-point lead but Temple couldn't tie the
game.The Seawolves opened the second half with a 13-7 run to go ahead
41-26 with 16:07 to play. Ford had six points in the spurt,
including a four-point play. Dupree had 10 points in Temple's 18-6
run that made it 47-44 with 8:27 to go.
