Utes stop late surge, beat Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -- Senior forward Kim Smith scored a
season-high 29 points and forward Jessica Perry added 13, leading
No. 22 Utah to a 72-67 victory over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday

The Utes (8-2) charged to a double-digit lead midway through the
second half and then withstood a late rally by Eastern Michigan.

After nine first-half lead changes, the Utes took the lead when
Julie Larsen hit a 3-pointer and added two free throws that gave
Utah a 30-27 lead.

The Utes extended their lead to seven points before Eastern
Michigan (4-5) closed within two points, 34-32, by halftime.

Ryan Coleman, who finished with 13 points, keyed a second-half
run that gave the Eagles a 39-37 lead. But Utah rallied.

Smith hit a 3-pointer with 12:21 to push Utah's lead to 48-44.
The Utes then scored eight straight points and led by 10 points
after Shona Thorburn's layup off of a lob pass.

Senior forward Nikki Knapp scored 21 points for Eastern
Michigan, which closed within two points in the final minute but
was unable to complete the comeback.
