SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) -- Seton Hall was hoping to make it two in a row against a ranked Big East opponent. It didn't happen.
Renee Montgomery scored 20 points to lead four Connecticut starters in double figures, and the No. 7 Huskies beat the Pirates 93-53 on Tuesday night.Mel Thomas added 16 points, Ann Strother had 14 and Nicole Wolff scored 10 for Connecticut (13-2, 3-0 Big East), which shot 60 percent from the field.Seton Hall, coming off a road victory against then-No. 12 Notre Dame, stayed close for most of the first half. Freshman Shantel Brown's 3-pointer pulled the Pirates (5-9, 2-1) within 27-21 with 5 minutes remaining, before the Huskies went on an 11-2 run to take a 15-point lead at the break."We had our chances to stay in the game in the first half," Seton Hall coach Phyllis Mangini said. "We missed some opportunities.Heta Korpivaara led the Pirates with 17 points. Jadis Rhodin and Monique Blake each added 12. Seton Hall shot just 35 percent, including 3-of-19 from 3-point range."It's a tough place to play. They always play us tough here," Strother said.Montgomery was 8-of-11, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, in only 21 minutes. The Huskies used superior team speed to create scoring opportunities, responding with a 32-7 run after Jadis Rhodin hit consecutive jumpers to pull Seton Hall to within 49-35 with 15:35 left."We got a lot of open shots on the fast break," Strother said.UConn has won 22 straight meetings since its last loss to Seton Hall in 1994.Mangini still saw reason for optimism about her team, which suffered its first Big East loss after wins over West Virginia and Notre Dame."Our team is improving. We've got to keep our heads up," she said.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
