NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Liz Sherwood scored 16 of her 22 points
in the first half and Vanderbilt (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today; No. 23 AP) defeated Mississippi State
87-48 Thursday night.
Sherwood, the NCAA Division I leader in field goal percentage
entering the game at 69.3 percent, hit her first six shots on
Thursday and finished 9-for-12 from the field with nine rebounds.
Vanderbilt (12-4, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) scored the first
14 points of the game and led 46-13 in the final minute of the
Heather Hollis scored 21 points for Mississippi State (6-10,
1-2), which trailed 46-15 at halftime after shooting 4-of-23 from
the field and committing 17 turnovers.
Caroline Williams hit two 3-pointers in a 22-4 run that extended
the Commodores' lead to 74-28 with 10 minutes to play. Mississippi
State went on a 13-2 run to trim the deficit below 40 points.
Williams and Tina Wirth each had 16 points for Vanderbilt, while
Nicole Jules added 10.
Robin Porter had 10 points for Mississippi State.
Vanderbilt junior Carla Thomas reached the 1,000-point plateau
for her career with her first basket of the game. She finished with
eight points, giving her 1,007 for her career.
