SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Shona Thorburn scored 28 points and Kim
Smith reached 2,000 career points to help lead Utah to a 75-62 win
over No. 16 New Mexico on Saturday.
The Utes (15-5, 6-3) held New Mexico without a field goal for
the final 3 minutes and moved into a second-place tie with the
Lobos (16-6, 6-3) in the Mountain West Conference.
The Lobos had won the last six meetings against Utah, but
couldn't overcome the combination of Thorburn and Smith. Thorburn,
who was one point away from tying her career high, also had eight
rebounds and four assists.
Smith, who needed just nine points to become the third woman in
school history to score 2,000, finished with 14. She also pulled
down 16 rebounds.
Dionne Marsh led New Mexico with 19 points and Katie Montgomery
added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Lobos, who lost Thursday
at No. 19 Brigham Young 60-55.
