No. 20 Vanderbilt pulls away to beat Arkansas

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Liz Sherwood, the nation's leader in field-goal shooting, was 7-for-9 and finished with 16 points as Vanderbilt (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) defeated Arkansas 64-59 Thursday night.

Vanderbilt (17-7, 6-4 Southeastern Conference) took its biggest lead of the first half when Cherish Stringfield hit a 3-pointer with 2:29 remaining in the period, giving the Commodores a 35-28 advantage.

Arkansas (13-10, 5-5), which beat Vanderbilt 52-51 at home on Jan. 8, came back from a 46-35 deficit 5 minutes into the second half. Dominique Washington's 3-pointer at the 8:16 mark capped the Razorbacks' 16-6 run to pull within one.

Sherwood followed with a basket and Dee Davis hit a free throw to push Vanderbilt's lead to 55-51.

Melissa Hobbs made a basket to cut Arkansas' deficit to 55-53, but never got any closer as Vanderbilt was 7-for-12 on free throws the rest of the way.

Carla Thomas finished with 11 points and Davis had 10 for the Commodores.

Leslie Howard led Arkansas with nine points, and Hobbs had 11 rebounds.
