NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Liz Sherwood, the nation's leader in
field-goal shooting, was 7-for-9 and finished with 16 points as Vanderbilt (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) defeated Arkansas 64-59 Thursday night.
Vanderbilt (17-7, 6-4 Southeastern Conference) took its biggest
lead of the first half when Cherish Stringfield hit a 3-pointer
with 2:29 remaining in the period, giving the Commodores a 35-28
advantage.Arkansas (13-10, 5-5), which beat Vanderbilt 52-51 at home on
Jan. 8, came back from a 46-35 deficit 5 minutes into the second
half. Dominique Washington's 3-pointer at the 8:16 mark capped the
Razorbacks' 16-6 run to pull within one.Sherwood followed with a basket and Dee Davis hit a free throw
to push Vanderbilt's lead to 55-51.Melissa Hobbs made a basket to cut Arkansas' deficit to 55-53,
but never got any closer as Vanderbilt was 7-for-12 on free throws
the rest of the way.Carla Thomas finished with 11 points and Davis had 10 for the
Commodores.Leslie Howard led Arkansas with nine points, and Hobbs had 11
rebounds.
