MISSOULA (AP) -- Katie Edwards scored 17 of her 26 points in the
second half and Montana held off a late rally to beat Portland
State 89-77 and move into a tie for the lead in the Big Sky
Conference standings with one weekend remaining.
The win is Montana's 24th 20-win season in 28 years under coach
Robin Selvig. Montana (20-5, 9-3 Big Sky) is tied with Idaho State
for the league lead. The two teams will play Thursday in Pocatello,
The Lady Griz led 71-61 on a 3-point shot by Dana Conway with
Heather Arns scored five points and Kelsey Kahle four as
Portland State (11-14, 5-7) pulled within 71-70 on Arns' jumper
with 4:31 to play.
A 3-pointer by PSU's Jenni Ritter tied the score at 73 with 4:04
Edwards broke the tie with a layup, and with the score 77-75
assisted on a three-point play by Tamara Guardipee to give Montana
an 80-75 lead with 2:41 to play.
Edwards, playing her final regular season home game, added a
jumper and a 3-pointer to put Montana up 85-75 with 1:06 remaining.
Jody McLeod, Montana's other senior, added 12 points and 11
rebounds. Mandy Morales fouled out with 20 points and seven
rebounds and Guardipee finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Kahle and Brianna Thompson led PSU with 19 points while Arns and
Ritter added 13.
Portland State led just once, at 2-0 on a basket by Thompson,
and trailed 41-37 at halftime.
