No. 14 DePaul tops Providence, stays in Big East hunt

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Khara Smith scored 22 points and had 13
rebounds to lead No. 16 DePaul over Providence 74-68 on Saturday.

Allie Quigley added 18 points for DePaul (23-5, 10-5 Big East),
which won its fifth straight game.

Providence (8-18, 3-12) pulled within two points four times in
the last 6 minutes but each time, DePaul countered with a key

Caprice Smith twice hit jump shots to protect DePaul's lead,
while Jenna Rubino and Khara Smith each made layups. Khara Smith's
basket with 3:21 left gave DePaul a 66-62 lead.

Providence got no closer than four points after that, cutting
the lead to 72-68 when Shauna Snyder hit a 3-point shot with 20
seconds left.

Quigley was key at the free-throw line, hitting six straight
shots in the last 30.8 seconds.

Snyder led Providence with 19 points. Gayle Nwafili added 17.

DePaul's zone trap defense early in the first half and again
with 12 minutes left in the second half gave Providence major
problems. DePaul scored 23 points off 20 turnovers.
