USC opens new arena with victory over Long Beach State

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Eshaya Murphy scored 13 of her game-high 21
points in the second half to help No. 22 Southern California open
the season and its new Galen Center with an 85-50 victory over Long
Beach State on Friday night.

At halftime, the school retired the uniform numbers of former
greats Cheryl Miller (for the second time) and Lisa Leslie.

Chloe Kerr added 15 points and Hailey Dunham had 10 for the
Women of Troy, who shot 64.5 percent from the floor in the second
half and buried the 49ers 48-20.

Long Beach State sophomore Carina Figueroa scored the first
points in the new building and finished with 12 points, two fewer
than junior Tyresha Calhoun.

It took the Women of Troy most of the first half to put away the
49ers, who beat them last season but who are much younger this
season with 14 underclassmen.
