DePaul uses stifling defense to win its own invitational

CHICAGO (AP) -- Allie Quigley had 26 points and eight assists to lead No. 23 DePaul to a 90-64 victory over Illinois State in the Blue Demon Invitational championship game Saturday night.

Caprice Smith had 15 points and 8 rebounds as DePaul (2-1) won its own tournament for the sixth straight year. Holly Medley had 13 points and Quigley added 5 steals.

Kristi Cirone had 12 points and 7 assists for Illinois State (2-2). Kenyatta Shelton added 14 points for the Redbirds.

Illinois State used a 9-2 run to cut the Blue Demon's lead to 13 midway through the second half. But DePaul responded with a 15-0 run to take a 76-46 lead with 8:44 left.

Trailing 23-14 in the first half, the Redbirds scored six straight points make it 23-20 with 9:47 left. DePaul hit on three consecutive 3-pointers during a 22-6 run to give the Blue Demons a 45-26 lead at halftime.

DePaul's defensive pressure forced the Redbirds into 19 turnovers that led to 28 points for the Blue Demons.

DePaul hit 13 of 27 shots from behind the 3-point line and shot 62.1 percent from the field in the second half.
