Larkins leads UNC to easy win over Sacramento State

HONOLULU (AP) -- Erlana Larkins showed off North Carolina's full-court attack, scoring 21 points and adding seven rebounds in the No. 2 Tar Heels' 99-38 victory over Sacramento State on Friday in the Rainbow Wahine Classic.

North Carolina (4-0) held the Hornets to only eight second-half points, outscoring them by 34 after the break in the first-round game.

The 61-point margin broke the tournament record of 59 set in 1987 when Texas beat Northern Arizona 93-34.

But it was the most points a team has scored against North Carolina this season in its first five games.

"That just shows how great we can play defensively and gets us ready for tomorrow," Larkins said.

North Carolina will play Gonzaga in the semifinals Saturday. Gonzaga beat No. 21 UCLA 62-57.

The Tar Heels had five players score in double digits.

In addition to Larkins, Camille Little added 16 points, Ivory Latta had 14, Heather Claytor 12 and Jessica Breland 11.

Kim Sheeny led Sacramento State (1-4) with nine points.

Larkins scored six points early to help North Carolina jump out to a quick 10-5 lead.

The Hornets were able to break the Tar Heels full-court press and make three shots from beyond the arc to take a 13-10 lead, but then North Carolina went on a 12-0 run.

Claytor hit four 3-pointers to lead an offense barrage as North Carolina built a 27-point lead by halftime, 57-30.

The Hornets scored six points from beyond the arc to avoid the early blowout, but gave up 18 turnovers.

After halftime, the Tar Heels came out strong forcing 17 more turnovers for a total of 35 on the game. The Hornets shot 36 percent from the field.

North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said she didn't make major changes at halftime and that her team wore down the Hornets.

"We just have good balance," she said.

She said she was happy to use her bench as all 11 players scored.

North Carolina also grabbed the rebounding edge 59-24.
