Louisville hangs on late for win over UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -- Angel McCoughtry scored 25 points to help Louisville (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) win its first game as a ranked team, 72-66 over UC Santa Barbara on Friday night.

UCSB (1-3) held a 61-59 lead with five minutes remaining when McCoughtry made a 3-point shot to put Louisville (5-0) ahead for good.

Clinging to a 66-63 lead in the final minute, the Cardinals got a clinching 3-point play on an offensive rebound by McCoughtry.

Jazz Covington scored 15 points for Louisville.

The Gauchos had four players in double figures, led by sophomore guard Whitney Warren with a career-high 18 points. Junior center Jenna Green had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

"This was our first road game, and I'm proud we just survived," Louisville coach Tom Collen said.

UCSB's biggest lead was 33-28 late in the first half. Covington's 3-point basket put the Cardinals ahead 34-33 at halftime.

Louisville built a 53-43 lead in the second half, but the Gauchos went on a 10-0 run. The score was tied eight times, and the lead changed hands six times.

Louisville made 49.1 percent of its shots. UCSB shot 36.4 percent but was aided by 17 offensive rebounds, six by Warren.
