TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Danielle Orsillo scored 19 points and Briann
January added 16 points and seven rebounds as No. 14 Arizona State
beat Boston University 75-53 in Friday night's first round of the
ASU Classic.
It was the first game for the Sun Devils (6-1) since the
15-year-old brother of starting forward Aubree Johnson died in his
sleep while in the U.S. Virgin Islands to see his sister play in a
tournament there. Arizona State and No. 18 Rutgers agreed to cancel
the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament after the
death, which was blamed on an enlarged heart.Johnson and starter Emily Westerberg missed Friday's game. They
were both in Idaho for Jordan Johnson's funeral on Saturday, Sun
Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne said.Arizona State advanced to Saturday night's championship game
against Northern Arizona, which beat Eastern Michigan 89-69 in
Friday night's other first-round game.Boston University (3-3) was led by Jesyka Burks-Wiley's 11
points off the bench.The Sun Devils held Terriers' leading scorer Katie Meinhardt to
six points -- nine under her average.January scored eight points in Arizona State's 12-0 start over
the first three minutes of the game. She had 12 points and four
rebounds as the Sun Devils built a 30-20 halftime lead.Boston University closed to 54-42 with 8:19 to play but Arizona
State scored seven unanswered points and the Terriers never got
closer than 16 the rest of the way.
