Sun Devils return to action with romp in ASU Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Danielle Orsillo scored 19 points and Briann January added 16 points and seven rebounds as No. 14 Arizona State beat Boston University 75-53 in Friday night's first round of the ASU Classic.

It was the first game for the Sun Devils (6-1) since the 15-year-old brother of starting forward Aubree Johnson died in his sleep while in the U.S. Virgin Islands to see his sister play in a tournament there. Arizona State and No. 18 Rutgers agreed to cancel the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament after the death, which was blamed on an enlarged heart.

Johnson and starter Emily Westerberg missed Friday's game. They were both in Idaho for Jordan Johnson's funeral on Saturday, Sun Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne said.

Arizona State advanced to Saturday night's championship game against Northern Arizona, which beat Eastern Michigan 89-69 in Friday night's other first-round game.

Boston University (3-3) was led by Jesyka Burks-Wiley's 11 points off the bench.

The Sun Devils held Terriers' leading scorer Katie Meinhardt to six points -- nine under her average.

January scored eight points in Arizona State's 12-0 start over the first three minutes of the game. She had 12 points and four rebounds as the Sun Devils built a 30-20 halftime lead.

Boston University closed to 54-42 with 8:19 to play but Arizona State scored seven unanswered points and the Terriers never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.
