Cal off to best start in 14 years after win over Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Ashley Walker had a season-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to help California (No. 17 ESPN/USA Today; No. 16 AP) rally for a 73-65 victory over Kansas on Sunday.

California (8-1), off to its best start in 14 years and its highest national ranking ever, trailed by four at halftime and was outrebounded 43-40 by the much smaller Jayhawks before pulling away slowly in the second half. Kansas (4-4), missed 14 of its first 15 shots to open the second half and shot just 32 percent for the game.

The Jayhawks, who only played one player over 6-foot, had a tough time inside against the larger, bigger Bears. Walker, who stands at 6-1, was 9-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 from the line. The 6-3 Devanei Hampton had 10 points and five rebounds for California, which shot 47 percent from the field and hit three of its four 3-point shots.

Kansas freshman Danielle McCray had 19 points and nine rebounds.

California opened the second-half on a 14-4 run to pull away.
