MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- Sophomore Mandy Morales scored 30 points
and was named MVP Friday as the University of Montana defeated
Wyoming 79-72 and won the Lady Griz Holiday Classic championship.
Morales averaged 24.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in
Montana's two victories at the basketball tournament, the first a
win over Canisius, 83-46. Junior Johanna Closson, who had 12 points
and eight rebounds against the Cowgirls, averaged 10.5 points and
7.0 rebounds in the two games, bringing her all-tournament honors.
Montana improved to 12-1 and Wyoming dropped to 9-3.
Wyomings Justyna Podziemska and Hanna Zavecz joined the
all-tournament team. Podziemska had 26 points in the championship
game and Zavecz 22 points, plus eight assists.
Canisiuss Brittane Russell and Idahos Katie Madison rounded out
the all-tournament team.
The Cowgirls controlled play Friday for most of the first half,
shooting 41.4 percent and taking a 36-31 lead into the half.
Montana still was down, 40-35, when a basket inside by sophomore
Tamara Guardipee sparked a game-deciding 17-2 run over the next
4:08, putting the Lady Griz up 10, 52-42.
On five occasions Wyoming trimmed the lead to 4 points. Four
times, Montana responded with a 3-pointer.
Podziemska and Zavecz were joined in the double-figures column
by Wyoming's Megan McGuffey, who had 11 points.
