With victory, West Virginia gets first win over Top 25 team

CHICAGO (AP) -- LaQuita Owens scored 22 of her career-high 26 points in the second half and West Virginia beat No. 24 DePaul 74-63 Tuesday night.

Chicago-area native Olayinka Sanni scored 19 of her 22 points in the first half and finished with eight rebounds for the Mountaineers (9-7, 1-3 Big East), who won for the fourth time in six games and improved to 1-5 against Top 25 teams. Chakhia Cole had 14 boards.

Jenna Rubino scored a career-best 27 points for DePaul (11-5, 1-2), which played only seven players because of injuries. Caprice Smith had 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Blue Demons lost for the fourth time in five games.

Allie Quigley made two free throws with 8:17 left to put DePaul in front 53-52. The Mountaineers countered with a 12-0 run capped by an Owens' 3-pointer to take a commanding 64-53 lead with 4:15 left.

DePaul put together a 16-4 surge in the first half to take a 23-9 lead. Rubino and Smith combined for 14 points during the run.

Sanni kept West Virginia in the game almost single-handedly, scoring 19 points in the first half on 8-of-8 shooting. Her teammates combined to hit only four of 19 shots in the half as the Mountaineers trailed 34-29 at the break.
